Experimental Stress Analysis |
 |
The services provided in the field of experimental stress analysis cover a wide range of potential clients. Experimental stress analysis services provided by Strainstall include static and dynamic testing using strain gauges and other sensors, investigations into the residual stress states of structures and components, as well as fatigue life estimates of vehicles in particular. |

Dynamic Testing
The dynamic testing capabilities of Strainstall are extensive. Our dynamic testing experiences include large multi-channel data collection tasks for fatigue life estimations, dynamic load and response testing of bridges and high-speed data collection for aero engine tests. Our capabilities include monitoring such parameters as strain, stress, load, acceleration, displacement, temperature and pressure. We have worked in many industries, including construction, civil, railway, offshore, marine and aerospace, to provide answers and solutions to very different and challenging problems.

In-Situ/Residual Stress Determination
Knowledge of residual stress/in-situ stress is of importance in predicting failure arising from overload, fatigue or stress corrosion cracking in metals/plastics and overload in concrete. Strainstall has developed semi-destructive techniques to determine residual stresses (mechanical engineering) and in-situ stresses (civil engineering), which are based upon the established technique of centre hole stress relief drilling. A small hole is drilled into the material and the relieved strains are measured, which are then used to determining the in-situ or residual stress. Dead load stresses can also be calculated using the same technique with a knowledge of the manufacturing stress state. Flagship
Capabilities include:
- Through plate thickness dead load stress
- Pressure Compensation Slotting for concrete or masonry (no mechanical properties required
- Parting out and material removal techniques
- Sach’s method for cylinders
- Instrumented centre hole coring for concrete
- Instrumented small hole coring (patented) for restricted space/pre-stressed concrete
- Tendon load determination on wires as small as 4.5mm diameter
- Pipeline dead load axial force and bending stress determinations
In-Situ and residual stress techniques include instrumented coring for concrete, instrumented drilling for steel beams, reinforcement bars and post tensioning tendons, and pressure compensation slot cutting for concrete and masonry.

Fatigue Testing
The measurement of fatigue life estimates is a key part of our services. We specialise in the measurement of fatigue life in heavy-duty construction and materials handling vehicles. Large multi-channel fatigue life tests are carried out using the Strainstall DART testing equipment. This equipment allows the recording of dynamic data from strain gauges installed at critical locations on the machine and then a series of post-processing programs analyse the data and presents the information in a report format. Both stress life S-N and strain life E-N calculations are available to allow castings as well as welded and non-welded structures to be evaluated. The same type of testing equipment has been successfully measuring fatigue on applications as diverse as road and rail bridges to space vehicle launch systems and wheelchairs.

Vehicles
The testing of vehicles is a key function in our range of services. We specialise in measurement of strain, stress and fatigue life testing of heavy-duty construction and materials handling vehicles. We have also tested cars, trucks, railway vehicles and wheelchairs. These systems can be used in the long or short term, and can be operated by one of our team of experienced test engineers, by the client or as a stand-alone unit.

Aerostructures
The space and aerospace industries have presented Strainstall with some of our biggest challenges in obtaining data and answers. These have included large-scale straingauge installations on test rig and flight test aircraft in both the UK and the rest of the world, in-flight testing up to Mach 2.0 and the measurement of residual stress states in large and small components during a series of manufacturing processes.
