Structural Monitoring

Strainstall in Structural Monitoring – measuring, analysing and reporting
The structural monitoring services provided by Strainstall include the short and long term monitoring of complete structures such as bridges, plant and buildings, as well as structural monitoring of components of large marine vessels, road and rail vehicles and aero structures. These range from static data logger systems to high speed/high data rate dynamic monitoring systems with intelligent data processing and reduction instrumentation. A wide range of sensors are used to measure parameters such as strain, stress, load, acceleration, displacement, vibration, temperature and pressure. Strainstall’s experience provides the right sensors together with the right monitoring instrumentation, to give the client the right service and answers.

In-Situ Stress Determination
In-Situ stress measurement is based upon instrumented stress relief techniques. These include instrumented coring for concrete, instrumented drilling for steel beams, reinforcement bars and post tensioning tendons, and pressure compensation slot cutting for concrete and masonry.

Dynamic Testing
The dynamic testing capabilities of Strainstall are extensive, and include high speed, multi-channel data collection. Tasks encompass fatigue life analysis and estimation of prototype vehicles, dynamic load response testing of bridges, high-speed stress and vibration testing of aero engines. Our dynamic testing experience is backed up by many years of working around the world in the construction, railway, offshore, marine, aerospace and manufacturing industries, providing us with very different and varying challenges to produce the right data and the right answers.

Structural Health Monitoring
Many new, complex structures are fitted with structural health monitoring systems. These are designed into a structure and provide a means for engineers to monitor the performance of key parameters under real environmental and traffic conditions. For example, measurements for a long span suspension bridge might include deck profile, cable load, hanger vibration, deck vibration, joint displacement and strain. As with any long term structural health monitoring system, usually the data produced confirms that everything is behaving correctly. For this reason, Strainstall’s system incorporates sophisticated software that processes data as it is collected, and consequently, summarised data is always available. Large volumes of data are only stored under alarm conditions.

Monitoring Systems
Strainstall design, assemble, programme, install and operate monitoring systems of varying complexity. These range from simple battery powered static logging systems to fully automated structural health monitoring systems. Strainstall’s sound understanding of industry requirements ensures that all systems provide the most appropriate and meaningful information to ensure any significant change in the condition or behaviour of a structure will be logged and reported. An internet based monitoring system has also been introduced.

Pressure Vessels
Strainstall regularly carries out proof tests on pressure vessels. These vessels are strain gauged internally and externally and then pressurised, with the sensor outputs monitored by a computer controlled datalogger. The response of the pressure vessel is viewed online to compare against the code criteria. These tests are usually carried out at the client’s premises, but small vessels can be tested at our works. The pressure tests can be carried out to either BS5500 or ASME VIII codes.

Pipelines
Measurements of the in-situ or residual stress state of buried gas, oil and water pipelines are regularly undertaken by Strainstall. We also install stress, displacement and temperature monitoring systems on the pipelines or supporting structures. These systems can be read manually, datalogged locally and facilities can be provided to download information remotely and send messages, summary data and alarms over a land line or cellular modem link.

StrainSoft Analysis
StrainSoft is a software package that takes data from data acquisition systems and analyses and presents the results in a graphical, easy to interpret format. It has been designed specifically for structural testing by Strainstall experts, who have utilised their many years of experience in monitoring and testing to create this user friendly program. StrainSoft accepts data from Strainstall data acquisition systems, but can also be configured to take information from any other systems with data as set up files that are available in ASCII format.
